Killeen, TX Neck Pain and Auto Injury

Neck pain is a common condition after a car crash, and it's something that Dr. Dorn sees frequently in our Killeen, TX office. Why is neck pain such a common condition after a car accident? How can chiropractic care help you get better?

The neck is exposed to very high forces during an auto injury, so it's not surprising that neck pain is so common from this type of injury. During even a low velocity wreck, your head is exposed to extremely rapid acceleration. In such crashes, a head that normally weighs about 10 pounds can suddenly weigh eight times as much. This force exerts an extreme strain on the tissues of the cervical spine. The bones of your neck are held together with strong bands of tissue called ligaments, and these ligaments provide stability for your neck. These ligaments can be sprained during a collision, just as the ligaments in your ankle can be sprained. A sprain means that the ligament is stretched or torn.

When you experience a sprained ligament, the injured tissues gets inflamed and painful, and that's what happens after a car crash. Your chiropractor helps by increasing flexibility in the injured region, which helps the tissues heal and helps minimize scar tissue.

Let us help you recover from neck pain. Dr. Dorn has helped many people with the same problem, and we can probably help you, too. The first step is to get an accurate diagnosis to determine what's causing your pain and then we will determine an appropriate treatment approach. Relief from Tension Headaches with Chiropractic

Killeen, TX Headache Treatment by Dr. DornMany people suffer from headache pain, and tension headaches are a common problem in our busy world. Postural problems and stress are common sources of tension headaches, and ones that Dr. Dorn and the staff here in our Killeen, TX chiropractic office have a lot of experience in treating.

Research Shows Chiropractic Eases Tension Headaches

The scientific literature verifies our results: A 2016 study from Spain treated a group of 76 men and women with chronic tension headaches. The participants were divided into four treatment groups: 19 patients were treated with suboccipital inhibition (the therapist presses on the tight tissues at the top of the spine); 19 with chiropractic adjustments; 19 with both adjustments and suboccipital inhibition; and 19 received no treatment.

The researchers reported that the spinal adjustments were effective at relieving pain, and that the best results were found when spinal adjustments were coupled with the suboccipital inhibition.

When we get stressed out, the nerves and tissues in the neck can be disrupted, resulting in pain. Chiropractic works by eliminating these strains and restoring the normal nerve function to the area.

Chiropractic Can Alleviate Need for Back Surgery

Killeen, TX Back Pain Treatment without SurgeryThe latest numbers show that there are over 500,000 spinal surgeries each year in the US. Although sometimes it's necessary to have surgery for back pain, the reality is that if you can prevent this type of invasive procedure, you're often better off.

Dr. Dorn is here to make sure that people in Killeen, TX have a healthy, non-surgical option for back problems. We've helped many patients heal from back pain without the need for surgery.

There are countless reasons to avoid unnecessary medical procedures: Surgeries often result in a longer recuperation time and complications, neither of which is a desirable scenario. Fortunately, as one study has found, chiropractic may actually keep you out of the operating room completely.

In this report, 1,885 workers with back injuries were examined over a three year period. When the workers first sought treatment with a surgeon, over 42 percent ended up having back surgery. For those who saw only a chiropractor, only 1.5 percent had surgery!

These findings imply that chiropractic care can help you heal from back pain without surgical procedures.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome and Auto Injury

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is a common condition after an auto injury, and it's something that Dr. Dorn sees often in our Killeen, TX office. Let's look at why thoracic outlet syndrome is frequently experienced after a car crash and see how chiropractic can help you recover.

The thoracic outlet is a bundle of nerves and blood vessels that pass through your neck and shoulder to your arm. These nerves and blood vessels don't have a lot of room, so they pass under and between the strong bands of muscles that support your head.

In a crash, these muscles can be stretched and strained. If injured, the muscles become swollen and sore, and they can develop scar tissue which restricts motion and puts stress on the tissues of the thoracic outlet. Pressure on the nerves can cause tingling or pins and needles in the shoulder, elbow and even the hand. Pressure on the blood vessels can also cause problems in the arm.

Sports Injuries and Chiropractic: Leg Injury

Killeen, TX-sports-therapyWhen playing sports that require a lot of lower body movement, like football, soccer, and basketball, it's not uncommon to suffer some type of injury to your lower extremities. Between pulled hamstrings, sprained ankles, knee injuries, and more, many people have found themselves out of commission. Dr. Dorn has seen all of these problems in our Killeen, TX patients. The good news is, chiropractic care can help prevent some of these injuries from developing and research proves it.

Dr. Dorn keeps current with all of the latest scientific research, and in a study published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, researchers from Macquarie University in Australia studied 59 semi-elite Australian Rules football players. Roughly half were placed in a control group and the others were put in a therapy group that received sports chiropractic care at regular intervals. During the first six weeks, this meant receiving care once per week. The following three months consisted of an adjustment every two weeks before reducing those to one visit monthly for the final three months of the study.

The authors noted that there was a "significant" decrease in the number of lower limb strains the players received in the treatment group when compared to the control. Furthermore, they observed that the subjects who engaged in chiropractic also had fewer weeks of missed practice and games as a result of non-contact knee injuries. This led them to conclude that sports chiropractic treatment should be added to "the current best practice management."

Every major sports organization in the United States and the US Olympic Team has chiropractors on staff for their players, because they know that chiropractic works. Killeen, TX Chiropractic Care for Headache

There are many different kinds of headache, but one of the most common types is known as "cervicogenic headache," or those that start in your neck.

Dr. Dorn sees a lot of people in our Killeen, TX office who are struggling with recurring headaches. Thankfully, chiropractic can often help, potentially reducing these types of headaches by 50 percent, and research confirms it.

A study was conducted involving 80 participants who reported experiencing at least five cervicogenic headaches during the prior three months. The objective was to discover how effective chiropractic was for this type of head pain, as well as to determine the number of treatment sessions required to achieve a positive effect.

The subjects were divided into four separate groups, so that each group was similar in age, gender, number of cervicogenic headaches, and their intensity. Of the four groups, two engaged in chiropractic treatments and two received light massage. Furthermore, one group assigned to each treatment received eight sessions and the other patients received double that amount.

Each person was assessed based on head pain, neck pain, and disability prior to the study and 12 and 24 weeks after treatment was complete. The researchers found that those who received chiropractic as opposed to massage reported fewer headaches at the conclusion of the study. Furthermore, improvements were maintained when checked six months after treatment ended.

Additionally, individuals who were taking medications for their headaches were able to lower their intake after completing the study. Those who received chiropractic adjustments had lower medication usage 24 weeks post-study.

Chiropractic and Disc Herniation Treatment

Killeen, TX non-surgical disc herniation treatmentDr. Dorn sees many patients weekly in our busy Killeen, TX chiropractic office who are searching for relief from the pain and agony they feel due to herniated discs. Our experience isn't unique; the scientific literature confirms that chiropractic care is a great way to treat herniated disc problems.

Don't Suffer! Dr. Dorn and Chiropractic Care Helps With Disc Herniation

One particular research study involved 27 people, 8 male and 19 female, who had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirming a disc herniation in either their neck or lower back. The subjects reported that they were experiencing pain, reduced range of motion, and sensory issues bad enough to keep them off work.

During the course of the research period, the subjects were managed using one of two common chiropractic practices: traction for herniated discs in the cervical area or flexion distraction for the men and women who had herniation issues in the lumbar area.

Each person was seen four or five times per week for the first two weeks, then three times each week, and then as needed for the remainder of the study. Based on the seriousness of the disc herniation, therapy ranged anywhere from six weeks to six months, with MRIs being conducted at various stages to identify what impact, if any, the chiropractic care was having in regard to the disc herniation.

Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With Back Pain and Herniated Disc

The investigators found that 80 percent of the subjects enjoyed a "good clinical outcome," meaning reduced pain and a reduction in other symptoms, such as numbness. Additionally, 77 percent of these men and women also showed MRI evidence that their disc herniation was either reduced or resolved completely. This resulted in 78 percent of the study participants being able to return to their place of employment and led the researchers to conclude that chiropractic is both "safe and helpful" for disc herniations.

Lower Back Pain and the Sacroiliac Joint

We see a good number of people with back pain in our Killeen, TX office, and Dr. Dorn finds that quite a few cases of back pain stem from the sacroiliac (SI) joint. Research has demonstrated that roughly 25% of all back pain originates in the SI joint, and now fresh research confirms what we see in our office: chiropractic is an effective approach to treating this problem.

In the study published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, thirty-two women with sacroiliac joint dysfunction were split into two groups and asked to participate in one of two treatment therapies. The first group was given a chiropractic adjustment only at the sacroiliac joint, and the alternate group got an adjustment to the sacroiliac joint as well as the lumbar spine.

Researchers found greater improvements in both pain and movement immediately following treatment, two days post-treatment, and 30 days later for the patients who had been given high-velocity low-amplitude manipulation to both the sacroiliac joint and the lumbar spine. This demonstrates that chiropractic manipulation administered in these two areas offers both prompt and continuing benefits for sacroiliac joint pain sufferers—even with only one treatment round.

So, if you are having trouble with sacroiliac joint pain, or live with back and leg pain and are ready to find out if your sacroiliac joint is the root, a consultation at our Killeen, TX office could be the first—and best—step towards feeling better. Give our office a call today at (254) 690-7090.

Back Pain and Car Crashes

If you suffer from back pain after an auto collision, don't worry. Dr. Dorn sees this type of problem frequently in our Killeen, TX office. Why is back pain such a common problem after a car accident? How can chiropractic care help you recover?

During a rear-end auto collision, your car and car seat are rapidly accelerated forward against your torso. Since car seats don't perfectly align with the curvature of your spine, the car seat can put uneven force on your lower back. This can cause some of your spinal vertebrae to move in one direction while an adjacent vertebrae might move in another direction. This differential motion can sprain or strain the ligaments that hold your spine together. This type of injury can cause chronic back pain if not treated right away. Fortunately, chiropractic is one of the most effective ways to treat back pain.

Let us help you recover from back pain. Dr. Dorn has helped many patients with the same condition, and we can probably help you, too. Dr. Dorn will first determine what's causing your pain and then work to restore your body to its natural functioning. Ready to make an appointment? You'll Miss Fewer Days of Work with Chiropractic Care

Killeen, TX Worker Injury Treatment and RecoveryWhen you're trying to support your family, take care of your home, and pay all of your bills on time, every day at your job counts. Work injuries can be a huge problem for many folks, and we see many of these types of injuries in our Killeen, TX office. Dr. Dorn appreciates your situation and is here to help.

The benefits of chiropractic care for work injuries are well-documented. A 2013 survey involving 651 adults who were troubled with either back or neck pain found that the men and women who didn't see a chiropractor missed work at twice the rate of those who were seeing a chiropractor.

So, why don't more people use chiropractic?

According to the participants in this study, two of the primary factors were that they thought they needed a medical referral for chiropractic care (which is typically no longer true) and they overestimated the costs associated with chiropractic treatment sessions by almost 70 percent.

The truth is, chiropractic patients actually spend less on care than medical patients, plus they are less likely to use drugs for their symptoms.

If you live in Killeen, TX and you've been injured at work, we can help. Give our office a call today at (254) 690-7090 for an appointment.
