Research Shows Chiropractic Adjustments Effective at Preventing Sports Injuries

Killeen, TX sports injury treatment and chiropracticWe see a large number of sports injuries in our Killeen, TX office, and Dr. Dorn is often able to assist these athletes. Stanford Children’s Hospital reports that over 3.5 million children of the ages 14 and below are hurt each year when playing sports. Add that to the close to 2 million adults injured every year while engaged in sports-related activities, as reported by statistics compiled by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, and you can begin to see the importance of preventing these sorts of widespread injuries. One way to potentially realize that goal, as reported by a study published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, is to engage in regular chiropractic treatments.

In Australian Rules football, hamstring and other leg injuries are common, frequently sidelining the players and impacting their team's odds of securing a win. One specific study was conducted using 59 semi-elite Australian Rules footballers to see if chiropractic could cut down on these injuries and help keep them playing.

Research Proves Chiropractic Helps in Treating Sports Injuries

For this study specifically, every one of the volunteers received medical treatment. Additionally, half of them also were given chiropractic sessions at the rate of 1 session per week for the first 6 weeks, biweekly sessions for the following three months, and one session per month for the remaining 3 months of the study. The remaining half had no chiropractic intervention at all and were used as the control group to assess the benefits of chiropractic care.

Following 24 matches, specialists reported a reduced number of lower limb muscle strains in the group that had been given chiropractic care. Additionally, that same group also missed fewer matches correlated to non-contact knee injuries. This lead the researchers to come to the conclusion that chiropractic ought to be added to sports training programs to dramatically reduce the quantity of leg injuries.

Chiropractic Can Decrease Shoulder Pain

Killeen, TX shoulder pain treatment and recoveryAccording to research, roughly 2-5 percent of the population will suffer from painful disorders like frozen shoulder syndrome at some point in their lives. That makes shoulder pain a common problem and one that Dr. Dorn sees in our Killeen, TX practice on a regular basis.

Research Proves Chiropractic Helps With Shoulder Pain

In general, this issue is more common for people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, and it tends to affect women more often than men. While ice, heat, and gentle stretches can often times help relieve the pain, so too can chiropractic.

As an example, one study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine looked at 50 people with frozen shoulder who received chiropractic care. The duration of care varied from 11 days to 51 days, with 28 days being the average.

The researchers found that almost all of the patients fared extremely well with chiropractic care. Here are the results:

8 of the subjects reported 50-75 percent improvement
25 indicated improvement ranging from 75- 90 percent
1 participant had complete resolution of their frozen shoulder pain

Only one patient reported an improvement of 50 percent or less, so studies like this show just how beneficial chiropractic can be when it comes to decreasing shoulder pain and increasing quality of life.

Chiropractic Better for Sciatica Than Surgery

Dr. Dorn works with countless sciatica patients here in our Killeen, TX office, and many of these patients were nervous that they might need surgery to treat their pain. The latest research indicates that a large number of people don't need surgery for this prevalent problem, and that chiropractic is more beneficial at clearing up sciatic nerve pain.

A popular surgery for sciatica is microdiscectomy, and in a 2010 study, researchers examined 80 individuals with sciatica who were referred for this procedure.

Forty patients were then randomly placed in one of two groups. The first group was to receive surgical microdiscectomy and the second group received chiropractic care.

Both groups improved; however, no obvious difference in results was recorded one year post-treatment between the surgery group and the chiropractic group. Additionally, around sixty percent of the participating patients who could not find pain relief from any other treatment method "benefited from spinal manipulation to the same degree as if they underwent surgical intervention."

In other words, chiropractic delivered the same positive advantages as surgery without having to undergo the greater amounts of surgery-based pain or suffer through extended recovery times often associated with that type of treatment method. Plus, you also don't run the risks affiliated with surgical microdiscectomy, such as nerve root damage, bowel or bladder incontinence, bleeding, or infection.

Surgery ought to be the last option for sciatica pain. If you live in Killeen, TX and you're experiencing back pain or sciatica, give Dr. Dorn a call today at (254) 690-7090. We'll help pinpoint the start of your pain and work hard to get you relief.

Treating Neck Pain with Chiropractic

Killeen, TX chiropractic neck pain treatmentAccording to The American Academy of Pain Medicine, more people in the US suffer with chronic pain than diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and cancer combined. In addition, neck pain is the third most reported type of pain, beat out only by back problems and headache.

Of course, many patients come to our Killeen, TX office seeking neck pain care, and Dr. Dorn has helped many of them find relief. This is a smart decision, as some research indicates that over 90% of neck pain patients get relief with chiropractic care.

Studies Confirm Chiropractic Works

A report published in The Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy involved 64 individuals who were suffering with neck pain. Roughly half were placed in an experimental group and the other half were designated to a comparison group. Both received chiropractic adjustments of the neck as well as a home exercise program, while the experimental group also received thoracic spine adjustments.

Information was collected before treatment began and one week post-treatment. The authors found that 94% of the experimental group claimed "significantly greater improvements" in regard to pain and disability in their neck symptoms. Just 35% of the individuals who received neck adjustments showed the same level of improvement, showing that looking at the entire spine is a critical part of restoring the body's normal function.

One more study posted in Physical Therapy involved 60 adults who were dealing with neck pain. Each man or woman was randomly assigned to one of two groups--thoracic spine thrust manipulation or non-thrust manipulation--with examinations occurring two and four days after the treatments.

Researchers found that the study patients who received the thrust manipulations (the same manipulations that offered such positive results in the first study) "experienced greater reductions in disability" than the patients who received the non-thrust adjustments. Their pain was lower as well, which shows that this type of approach offers many benefits.

Chiropractic Even Offers Benefits After Failed Neck Surgery

Another study found the same kind of positive outcomes after thoracic adjustments in a patient who had a failed neck surgical treatment. This particular case involved a 46-year-old patient who had recently had neck surgery but still experienced neck pain, headaches, pain in her elbow, and muscle fatigue.

The woman reported decreased pain in her neck and lower headache intensity, immediately after the first chiropractic treatment session. After six weeks of care, which involved chiropractic, exercise, and patient education, the patient still rated her pain at a zero on a scale of 1 to 10. Her neck disability improved as well, with a rating score that represented that it was a "great deal better."

It is studies like these that demonstrate the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments, even if you've already attempted medical procedures that didn't provide relief. So, if you are suffering with neck problems and would like to find a remedy that has a high success rate, try chiropractic. It may just be the relief you're looking for.

Preventing Migraines with Chiropractic

Killeen, TX natural migraine treatment by Dr. DornWith the Migraine Research Foundation reporting that migraine headaches affect 38 million people in the United States (more than diabetes and asthma put together), it's no surprise that Dr. Dorn treats a lot of migraine patients in our Killeen, TX office. Although some folks choose to relieve migraine pain with drugs, chiropractic is a great, all-natural alternative that often produces positive results.

Research Supports Chiropractic Care Helps With Migraines

For example, one report published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics involved 127 participants ranging in age from 10 to 70-years-old who struggled with regular (at least monthly) headaches. Each subject received up to 16 chiropractic sessions. The subjects noted that their headache frequency, duration, and disability two months before the study began, during the duration of the sessions (which was two months), and two months post-treatment.

What the investigators discovered is that spinal manipulation therapy reduced the frequency, duration, and disability of the migraine headaches when compared with the control patients who didn't receive chiropractic. Even better, this enabled them to take less medication for the pain, offering them an all-natural answer for a chronic problem.

Another paper found that a combination of chiropractic and neck massage reduced migraine headaches almost 68%.

If you have migraine headache pain and are looking for help, call Dr. Dorn today and request an appointment in our Killeen, TX chiropractic office. We'll do what we can to help you become pain-free!

Chiropractic Helps with Knee Pain

Killeen, TX natural knee knee pain treatmentKnee pain is a common problem for patients in our Killeen, TX chiropractic practice, and Dr. Dorn has successfully provided many of these folks relief. This is largely because chiropractic care has been found to help with many forms of knee pain.

For instance, some patients experience pain in and around the knee area due to degenerative arthritis. Research has demonstrated that this condition responds very well to chiropractic--and rather quickly, too. In fact, one study published in The Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association found that men and women with osteoarthritis in their knees felt considerable pain relief and enhanced function after just two weeks of chiropractic care.

If your knee pain is as a result of a medial meniscus tear, chiropractic could likely help with that as well. One study found that integrating chiropractic with soft tissue treatment, rest, ice, and compression on the affected knee helped lower the intensity of the pain.

Clearly, sometimes a knee replacement surgery is required in order to fix the issue, and if that's the case, chiropractic care can also help improve the outcome. How?

Research Shows Chiropractic Helps With Knee Pain

Research has found that people with low back pain often have less positive results after knee surgery. So, dealing with your back pain through chiropractic prior to having a total knee arthroplasty can help with your post-surgery healing.

No matter what your knee issue, Dr. Dorn can likely help. Call our Killeen, TX practice today and find out what we can do for you!

Killeen, TX Chiropractic Effective for Cervicogenic Headache

We see a lot of individuals with headaches in our Killeen, TX office, and Dr. Dorn has been able to help many of them. Furthermore, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one half of all adults have difficulty with some sort of headache problem, so this actually isn’t unexpected. One of the most common kinds of headaches that our patients are afflicted by is cervicogenic headache which, luckily for us, chiropractic can commonly help.

What is a Cervicogenic Headache?

A cervicogenic headache is one that stems from problems in the cervical spine. It could be due to an issue with either the spine itself (in particular, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it may be because of a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This problem in your spine produces compaction or aggravation of the spinal nerves, which can generate headache pain.

How can you recognize if the headache you are feeling is a cervicogenic headache? Other than getting a diagnosis from a healthcare specialist, a common symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or pain in your neck. This is occasionally coupled with pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.

Headache Relief with Chiropractic

Since cervicogenic headaches will not go away until whatever problem is generating them is remedied, it is crucial to get treatment as opposed to just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an excellent approach, and one that can provide a great deal of pain relief.

In one study printed in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, researchers followed 80 people who had recurring cervicogenic headaches. Half received chiropractic care and the other 50% underwent light massage therapy. Each participant was examined 12 and 24 weeks after the procedures and it was discovered that chiropractic delivered the most beneficial effects.

Specifically, this study revealed that chiropractic adjustments offered patients more significant pain relief and lowered the frequency of headaches that occurred. In addition to that, it also mitigated the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.

To find out what Dr. Dorn can do for you and your headache pain, call us today. We'll do our best to get you the pain relief you need!

Chiropractic Treatment of Ankle Sprain

Killeen, TX natural ankle sprain treatmentWe see many patients in our Killeen, TX office with ankle sprains but Dr. Dorn has had a lot of success helping them recover more quickly. Why are ankle sprains so common and how can chiropractic care help?

According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), an estimated 25,000 people in the US sprain their ankles every day. As a matter of fact, these injuries make up almost half of all sports injuries, causing people to spend time away from the activities they enjoy most.

Like any injury, there are many causes of ankle sprains. The most common is inversion, or when the ankle rolls inward. This injury can take place due to one forceful movement, or it can develop over a period of time, and exercises that increase the risk for this type of ankle sprain include running and jumping. You're also at risk if you have previous ankle injuries, poor posture or balance, weak muscles, and reduced range of motion.

How Can Chiropractic Treatments and Dr. Dorn Help?

A study printed in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics set out to determine chiropractic's role when it comes to ankle sprain recovery. The authors enrolled 33 men and women between the ages of 18 and 45 who had a history of ankle inversion sprains, who were experiencing tenderness and/or pain, and had not re-injured the ankle in the previous six weeks.

18 of the subjects were assigned to receive rehabilitation and the remaining 15 people received chiropractic in addition to rehabilitation. Each individual had five full weeks of treatment, with the rehabilitation group receiving treatment seven days a week and the rehabilitation plus chiropractic group receiving treatment six out of the seven days.

Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With Ankle Sprains

The study found that the people who had both rehabilitation and chiropractic fared the best at the 4-week mark when it came to pain and joint restriction. In addition, no bad effects were reported, showing that chiropractic is safe.

Chiropractic Care Helps Relieve Herniated Disc Problems

Killeen, TX chiropractic disc herniation treatmentUnfortunately, many of our Killeen, TX patients know the pain associated with a herniated disc all too well. On a positive note, Dr. Dorn has helped many people with disc pain, and a number of medical studies have verified that chiropractic care can help people recover from this kind of problem.

Research on Chiropractic for Disc Herniations

In one study, researchers from Switzerland recruited 148 patients who were dealing with pain in their lower back and legs due to a disc herniation (which was confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI). Each individual then received chiropractic adjustments that focused on the area of his or her disc herniation.

Data was obtained after the first treatment session at set intervals--namely, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year--to ascertain what kind of short-term and long-term effects, if any, chiropractic care offers when it comes to resolving this particular problem. Among the data obtained was the individual's self-reported changes in both lumbar and leg pain.

Researchers found that, overall, the study participants reported "significant improvement" for both types of pain every time the results were collected. In fact, over 90% of the individuals reported that their pain "improved" within the first three months, with 88% still citing improvement one year after their first treatment session.

Even those people who were defined as "chronic" still claimed an improvement in pain at a rate of 89% one year beyond when treatment first began. This is the same positive result that was found in the following case study.

Case Study Results

In this report, a 26-year-old man had presented with disc herniation symptoms such as pain in the lower back, left leg, and left groin area, along with left foot drop and muscle weakness. He had suffered with these issues for more than two years after sustaining a sports injury, and his disc herniation was confirmed via MRI.

After receiving chiropractic, "The patient responded favorably and his multi-symptom complex resolved within 90 days of treatment." In addition, the patient was still experiencing relief one year after the chiropractic intervention.

Studies like these show how helpful chiropractic can be when it comes to alleviating herniated disc pain and treating the symptoms they bring about. So, if you are suffering from back pain caused by a herniated disc and want to find some relief, chiropractic might be an effective solution.

Don't suffer from chronic herniated disc pain. Give our Killeen, TX office a call today at (254) 690-7090 for a consultation or appointment.

Natural Carpal Tunnel Treatment with Chiropractic

Killeen, TX natural carpal tunnel treatmentDr. Dorn sees a lot of patients struggling with carpal tunnel syndrome in our busy Killeen, TX chiropractic office. While some people think that the origin of this wrist-related pain is muscular, it's really a syndrome that arises from the nerves--and not just the nerves in your hands.

Research Proves Chiropractic Helps With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

A recent study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy evaluated 71 women between the ages of 35 and 59 who were diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. Upon studying the subjects' neck range of motion, the researchers found that the women had less cervical flexibility when compared to a healthy control group.

In addition, they also discovered that the degree of the women's reported carpal tunnel pain was linked to the lateral flexion of the cervical spine. In other words, the less mobility in the neck, the greater the level of pain.

This study is very important, as you can't effectively address a condition until you fully understand its cause. By recognizing that the root of carpal tunnel symptoms is in the neck, this means that natural approaches like chiropractic can often restore normal function, reducing the need for risky surgical procedures.

If you suffer with carpal tunnel pain, call our Killeen, TX office and ask how Dr. Dorn can help you get relief!
