Chiropractic: The Natural Approach to Back Pain

Killeen, TX chiropractic back pain treatmentChiropractic is centered on the principle of helping your body to heal naturally through spinal adjustments and lifestyle changes that encourage wellness. For Dr. Dorn, this means working to restore your body's healthy functioning to avoid the need for drugs or surgery. We find that most of our Killeen, TX patients are happy to find a natural answer for their health conditions.

One benefit of chiropractic is that it helps people decrease or even eliminate the use of narcotics. Prescription medications are frequently supplied to individuals who have back problems. This is such a significant concern that the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) issued a report stating that opioid (painkiller) dangers outweigh the advantages when prescribed for back pain.

Some of the most common opiates, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, include hydrocodone (Vicodin), oxycodone (OxyContin and Percocet), morphine, and codeine. Data provided by the AAN mention the fact that about half of the people taking these types of substances for a period of three months are still dependent on them five years later. This can further complicate the issue of back pain and healing, especially if an opiate addiction arises.

Contrast that to chiropractic care which features natural healing and the benefits are obvious. While a drug might be helpful at temporarily suppressing the discomfort of a health condition, it's not a real solution to the problem. A drug won't mend your damaged back; it will only mask the pain.

Dr. Dorn will first examine you to get to the origin of your back problems and then work with you to solve the spinal interference -- without risky medications.

If you're ready for pain relief, naturally, give our Killeen, TX office a call at (254) 690-7090 to make an appointment with Dr. Dorn.

Chiropractic More Effective than Drugs for Back Pain

Chiropractic More Effective than Drugs for Back Pain

In our Killeen, TX practice, Dr. Dorn has helped countless people heal from back pain. If you are suffering from back pain, you've probably been tempted to take drugs to relieve the pain. You should understand that research shows that chiropractic care is usually a much healthier approach than drugs when it comes to relieving this specific type of problem.

In a 2013 study published in the journal Spine researchers included 101 men and women who had experienced back pain for at least two days. Each patient was then designated to one of three groups. The first group, which was made up of 37 people, received chiropractic treatment and a placebo of the non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac. The second group of 38 participants received fake chiropractic treatments and the genuine drug. The third group of 25 subjects acted as the control as those individuals engaged in sham chiropractic and also received the placebo, thus having no real care whatsoever.

Both of the groups that received some form of actual treatment, whether through chiropractic or the drug diclofenac, fared better than the control subjects who had no real therapy. However, when the two active groups were compared to one another, the people who received chiropractic adjustments had improvements that were "significantly better" than those who took the medications.

Chiropractic Promotes Natural Healing

Because chiropractic care is non-invasive and involves no use of medication, it helps enhance healing without adverse effects. For example, NSAIDs can result in ulcers, heart problems, and other serious health concerns. Plus, the benefits of chiropractic care last longer as it's intended to resolve the source of the spinal interference, not just treat the symptoms.

If you're ready to address your back pain naturally, then chiropractic care is for you. Schedule an appointment in our Killeen, TX office with Dr. Dorn today at (254) 690-7090. We'll help improve your back pain in a healthy way!

Chiropractic Is a Natural Alternative to Back Surgery

Killeen, TX chiropractic back pain treatmentIn our Killeen, TX practice, we see a large number of patients who are troubled with back pain, and some of these people have been told they might need surgery to recover. Fortunately, Dr. Dorn has helped many people get relief without the need for any type of operation. The scientific literature confirms the results we see in our office. One study published in the academic journal Spine found that consulting with a chiropractor as your first move in overcoming with your back issues may actually keep you out of the operating room.

In this scientific study, medical researchers from Dartmouth analyzed statistics from 1,885 workers from the state of Washington who first saw either a surgeon or a chiropractor for their low back issues. They then used three years' worth of follow-up medical information to determine whether the individuals wound up having back surgery in an attempt to correct the problem.

What the researchers observed was that about 43% of the men and women who first saw a surgeon for their back issues ended up in surgery in that 3-year time span, whereas only 1.5% of those who first saw a chiropractor had the same fate. The authors wrote:

"Even after controlling for injury severity and other measures, workers with an initial visit for the injury to a surgeon had almost nine times the odds of receiving lumbar spine surgery compared to those seeing primary care providers, whereas workers whose first visit was to a chiropractor had significantly lower odds of surgery."

These are impressive results. Visiting a chiropractor significantly reduces your odds of getting back surgery, plus the chiropractic patients in this study "had lower odds of chronic work disability" and they also had fewer expensive MRI tests.

Let's also take note this important detail: this study was conducted by orthopedic surgeons from Dartmouth College, and printed in the world's most prestigious medical publication on spinal injuries.

Why You Should Avoid Surgery

Any surgical procedure has risks, but a serious problem associated with spinal surgery is that there's a very high rate of failure. In an important analysis in the European Spine Journal, researchers wrote:

"Failed back surgery is a problem that has become sufficiently widespread to even warrant its own special conferences, with recent reviews reporting failure rates ranging from 5 to 50%."

The experts in this same study concluded:

"It is extremely difficult to identify unequivocal predictor factors that can be used to accurately predict the outcome of surgery."

As a chiropractor, Dr. Dorn is convinced that surgery should be the absolute last resort for treating back pain. Chiropractic care works to restore your spine to its normal function--without risky surgery or drugs--and many scientific studies have documented the usefulness of chiropractic for back pain.

Faster Sciatica Recovery with Chiropractic Adjustments

In our Killeen, TX office, it isn't unusual for us to see patients troubled with sciatic nerve pain, and Dr. Dorn has helped many of these people improve with chiropractic. What makes chiropractic so helpful to those who suffer with sciatica? First, it reduces their healing time and a Norwegian research study confirms it.

In the article, which took place in a Norwegian hospital's orthopedic department, researchers looked at 44 patients who presented with abrupt low back pain that was diagnosed as acute sciatica. The participants were all treated by a chiropractor, with the average follow-up being two years after treatment.

The authors discovered that all but two patients returned to work after receiving chiropractic care, which is a 95% success rate. Furthermore, the average length of time that the patients spent off work "was reduced by two thirds as compared with that associated with conventional medical treatment."

Considering that the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 170,450 days of work were missed in 2013 due to employees dealing with back or spine-related issues, that is about 112,500 work days that could potentially be recovered each and every year solely by receiving chiropractic care. Not only could that increase productivity, but it would also decrease costs to businesses and employees from lost work.

How to Avoid Surgery for Back Pain

Although some people are still skeptical about chiropractic, even the American Medical Association (AMA) suggests that adjustments should be tried prior to surgical treatment—the one option that should be a last resort.

Dr. Dorn has seen many back pain patients in our Killeen, TX office who have been in pain for years and who are worried that they might need an operation for their back pain. Dr. Dorn has had great success in helping patients recover and avoid risky surgery, and the science backs up our experience.

Recently, in a study conducted on about 2,000 Washington State workers who suffered from a back injury while at work, more than 40% who saw a surgeon first following their injury found themselves having back surgery within three years. That compares to just 1.5% of the people who first sought treatment with chiropractic care, showing that this non-invasive approach is extremely effective at keeping you off the operating table.

There are alternatives to risky medical procedures. Chiropractic is a proven effective and safe way to improve the function of your spine, which is the root cause of back pain.
